Adipositas im Kindes- und Jugendalter Eine Analyse bestehender Therapie- und Präventionsangebote unter besonderer Berücksichtigung des Nationalen Aktionsplans
Childhood and adolescent overweight and obesity represent a growing public health challenge, with increasing prevalence rates observed in Austria. At the same time, there is a lack of transparency regarding existing prevention and treatment programs for affected children and adolescents. This thesis aims to provide a structured overview of current therapeutic approaches and prevention programs in Austria and to evaluate their quality. The guiding research questions address: (1) differences among existing regional programs for the treatment of childhood obesity, (2) the structure and potential implementation challenges of the planned national action plan, and (3) the potential long-term benefits of a nationwide, comprehensive program.

The study is based on a literature review combined with active research of available programs, including online searches and direct contact with responsible institutions and providers. Identified programs were subsequently compared with current guideline recommendations. From more than 240 pubicly listed offers 9 preexisting prevention and treatment programs and 8 “Leichter Leben Kids & Teens” programs—representing the national care concept—met the defined inclusion criteria and were subjected to qualitative analysis.

The results indicate that programs within the national care concept are generally of high quality and largely fulfill current guideline recommendations. However, significant gaps remain in terms of nationwide availability and accessibility, particularly for specific patient groups. Existing regional programs are predominantly prevention-oriented, often unidisciplinary in design, and frequently too short in duration. The findings underline the importance of the national action plan.

In conclusion, the national action plan provides an important step toward improving therapeutic care but requires further expansion. This work shows a structured overview and identifies high-quality programs. Practical implications include raising awareness among referring physicians, pediatricians, and parents, extending program duration to allign with guideline recommendations. Furthermore expanding regional availability, and implementing location-independent (virtual) interventions is crucial for providing adequate treatment and prevention to every family. Limitations include the exclusive focus on Austria and on publicly accessible programs. Future efforts should emphasize broad parental education on healthy nutrition, as family environments play a key role in the development of childhood obesity.
